The back is a required maneuver, so you may as well get paid for it. Cody Crow of No Where But UP Performance Horses shows how he moves a correct-but-unremarkable back into the plus column: asking with the hand and reinforcing with a cluck and leg, then shoving the hip back to the right when it starts migrating left. He also gets honest about his own mistake on camera — throwing the horse straight from a stop into the back and getting a high neck and a crooked hip for it — and explains why you have to let the horse rebalance and give him a step or two before you ask for tempo.
